Booking & Group Size

We guide groups of 4 to 8 hunters per outing, with a 4-hunter minimum. Larger groups are less likely to be combined with another party — if you want a fully private hunt, let us know at booking.

Yes — a 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your date, due at the time of booking.

All deposits are non-refundable. If you cancel, your 50% deposit is forfeited, since we've reserved that date exclusively for your party.

The Hunt

Kansas sits in the heart of the Central Flyway, one of North America's four major migration corridors — funneling millions of ducks and geese south from Canada each fall. Council Grove sits right in the middle of it, with rivers, wetlands, and flooded agriculture that hold birds all season.

Kansas duck season opens in early September with a special teal season and runs in stages through late January, with goose seasons extending into late February. Dates are set annually by KDWP — visit kdwp.ks.gov for current dates, or give us a call. We guide hunts November through mid-February, covering peak migration.

November through mid-February is prime season, and each month hunts differently:

  • November — Fresh migrating birds, aggressive and responsive to calls
  • December — Peak migration, typically our most productive month
  • January — Late-season push with concentrated birds
  • February — Goose season takes center stage

Most hunts wrap up by 1PM, though weather and bird activity play a role. Plan for a full morning — we're up before sunrise. Evening hunts are called on a day-by-day basis.

The daily limit is 6 ducks, including no more than: 5 mallards (2 hens), 3 wood ducks, 3 scaup, 2 canvasbacks, 2 redheads, and 2 pintails. Six of any single species (teal, gadwall, wigeon, etc.) also counts as a legal limit. Limits are set by KDWP/USFWS and subject to change.

Limits vary by species and zone: Canada Geese are typically 3/day, White-fronted Geese (Specklebellies) typically 2/day, and Light/Snow Geese have no daily limit during the Conservation Order. Always confirm current limits at kdwp.ks.gov before your hunt.

A special late-season period (typically February–April) when USFWS lifts standard restrictions — including electronic calls and shotgun plugs — and removes daily bag limits on Snow and Ross's Geese. It's one of the highest-volume hunts available anywhere. Legendary Outfitters runs guided Conservation Order hunts — contact us for availability.

Yes — pheasant hunting is available as an add-on to your waterfowl package, giving you the chance to combine upland and waterfowl hunting in a single trip. Pheasant is not currently offered as a standalone hunt. Contact us for availability and pricing based on your dates and group size.

Absolutely. Our guided hunts work for every experience level — our guides handle the setup, calling, and strategy, so newer hunters can focus on the experience. We'll walk you through everything before the hunt starts, in some of the most productive bird country in Kansas.

What to bring

Bring your gun, shells, and waders — we handle blinds, decoys, calls, and setup. Kansas mornings are brutally cold, especially December–February, so layer up:

  • Base layer — moisture-wicking thermal, not cotton
  • Mid layer — heavyweight fleece or wool
  • Outer layer — waterproof, windproof shell
  • Waders — insulated chest waders, 800g minimum for late season
  • Headwear, gloves, boots — warm and waterproof/insulated throughout

Camo is recommended but not required. Dress warmer than you think — you can always shed a layer.

We ask that hunters leave dogs at home. Our guides run professionally trained retrievers on every hunt, which keeps things clean, safe, and productive for everyone.

Yes — federal law prohibits lead shot for waterfowl hunting. Steel, bismuth, or other approved non-toxic loads are required. Call us if you're unsure what to bring.

Yes — guns are available to rent for $75/day, with shells available at market price. Let us know when you book so we have everything ready.

Licenses & Stamps

Yes — every hunter needs their own valid licenses and stamps before arriving:

  • Kansas Hunting License — $27.50 resident / $97.50 non-resident (under 16: not required for residents, $42.50 for non-residents)
  • Kansas State Waterfowl Stamp — $10.00
  • Kansas HIP Stamp — $2.50
  • Federal Migratory Bird Stamp — $26.50

All but the Federal stamp can be purchased online at ksoutdoors.com or through a licensed agent (Emporia, Topeka, Wichita, or Kansas City all work depending on your route in). The Federal stamp is available at any US Post Office or duckstamp.com. We recommend picking everything up before arriving. Prices subject to change — confirm current rates at kdwp.ks.gov.

Lodging, Meals, & Logistics

We're centrally located between Wichita (~77 miles) and Kansas City, MO (~110 miles) — either works well depending on where you're flying from.

Lodging is included only with our Hunt + Lodge package ($600/hunter/day). Hunt Only bookings do not include lodging. Meals can be arranged as an add-on for either package — let us know when you book and we'll coordinate everything.

Legendary Outfitters does not sell or serve alcohol. You're welcome to bring your own — alcohol is not permitted during any active hunt or while firearms are out. Once the morning hunt wraps up and all firearms are securely stored, feel free to relax and enjoy a drink back at the lodge.
